U.S. holds Beach Volleyball summit
California, USA, January 20, 2011 - Some of the United States' top Beach Volleyball players, including Jen Kessy and April Ross, the 2009 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch world champions, attended the USAV Beach Performance Summit from January 12-13 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.
Nine women’s national team players attended along with two men’s players and three coaches. Junior national team members Tara Roenicke and Summer Ross, who won the 2010 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch Junior World Championship, were special guests at the summit.
Kevin Wong, Casey Jennings, Tyra Turner, Angie Akers, Brooke Hanson, Lauren Fendrick, Ashley Ivy, Lisa Rutledge and Brittany Hochevar also attended the Summit alongside Kessy and Ross.
"The Beach Performance Summits have been a big part of the annual preseason preparation for many U.S. elite beach athletes,” Ali Wood Lamberson, USA Volleyball Director of Beach Programs said. “Now that we have this world class facility to combine with our great team of USOC sports performance professionals, we can provide the athletes with several great training blocks where they can get away from it all and focus on nothing but their training, with the ultimate goal of repeating our double-gold performance from 2008 [at the Olympic Games in Beijing] in London."
The coaches who attended were Jeff Conover, who works with Kessy and Ross, Dave Denitz, who works with Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena and Jeff Alzina, who coaches Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal.
The athletes and coaches attended presentations by various USOC staff members on planning, diet, sport psychology and periodization, heading into the season prior to the 2012 Olympic year.
