Bela Hobor and Ning Wang are the two most experienced volleyball referees having officiated at the last three Olympic Games while Darryl Friesen and Miguel Ramirez have officiated at three beach volleyball competitions. The last three Olympics for Mr Friesen while Mr Ramirez was engaged in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008. Ms Salvatore has also officiated three times as a referee – for beach volleyball in Atlanta, and in volleyball in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
At previous Olympics for beach volleyball there were 14 referees appointed with four host nation refs from 1996-2004 before the quota was raised to 16 in 2008 with only three host nation referees. In 2012 the count will stand at 16 referees with only two host nation referees.
The appointments finalised a three year period of evaluation, training and education of international referees at international events – World Championships, World League, World Grand Prix for volleyball; World Tour for beach volleyball - while the FIVB also worked together with LOCOG and the Great Britain Volleyball Federation to train British scorers and line judges.
The volleyball competition at the 2012 Olympic Games runs from July 28 to August 12 with beach volleyball taking place from July 28 to August 9.
